What Artishock Theater Highly Recommends for Foreigners
In 2025, ARTiSHOCK Theater will celebrate its 25th anniversary season. Over its rich history, ARTiSHOCK has become a true Almaty landmark—a theater that embodies the city's open, friendly, and free-spirited nature.
ARTiSHOCK warmly welcomes everyone: locals, tourists, and those visiting the city for work. While the primary languages of our performances are Russian and Kazakh, we offer a selection of productions specifically tailored to be accessible to international audiences, regardless of language.
These performances fall into two main categories: "Artist’s theater" and " Contemporary theater." We’d be delighted to share more about these fascinating forms of storytelling.

Artist’s theater

This is a visually driven theatrical experience where the story unfolds through objects, lighting, music, body movement, atmosphere, gestures, and symbols—creating a canvas of imagination with minimal dialogue.
At ARTiSHOCK, the productions in this genre are directed by Anton Bolkunov, a leading theater artist, set designer, and director whose works are staged in Kazakhstan, Russia, and Uzbekistan. He is also a recipient of the prestigious Golden Mask theater award.
In his work, Anton explores world literature, reimagining it through the lens of performance and artistic experimentation. This approach has brought to our repertoire such productions as One Hundred Years of Solitude based on the novel by Gabriel García Márquez, Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky, and The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe.
By forgoing dialogue, these performances transcend language barriers, making them accessible to audiences regardless of the languages they speak or the countries they come from.
We asked Anton Bolkunov to share his insights on each of these productions:
One Hundred Years of Solitude
"I chose this novel precisely because it is, in its purest form, a work of visual art or, as we call it, an artist's theater. It’s a novel that defies all templates—a pseudo-documentary bible encompassing the entirety of the human experience.
The book made a huge impression on me as a child with its extraordinary composition and fantastical atmosphere. Like the novel itself, our production resists being classified as either somber or cheerful; it maintains a rhythm and mood that encapsulate both war and humor. It's about life and destiny as givens that one cannot change."
Crime and Punishment
"A key aspect of this production is the stage space. The location is transformed almost beyond recognition. On the Big Stage, we create a Dostoevsky-inspired St. Petersburg, enclosing the audience within its walls as if in one of the city's iconic courtyard wells.
Another audience favorite is the finale, after the bows, when the set and its intricate details can be explored like an exhibit in a modern art museum."
The Raven
"Edgar Allan Poe's poem The Raven is one of the most iconic works in world literature. Even more intriguing, this is a solo performance by actress, director, and ARTiSHOCK’s artistic director, Galina Pyanova.
It’s a profound exploration of loneliness, melancholy, doomed love, and death. The famous refrain, 'Nevermore,' serves as the leitmotif of a deeply poignant story expressed through pantomime, clowning, circus elements, puppet theater, visual theater, musical theater, and a contemporary reinterpretation of classical literature."

For lovers of movement and visual storytelling
The World of Beautiful Butterflies
This dance performance combines contemporary choreography, the poetry of Ivan Vyrypaev, and the music of Meredith Monk.
Choreographer Yulia Taratintseva is a deeply sensitive artist who loves working with atmosphere and light. The performance "The World of Beautiful Butterflies" tells a story filled with the search for the meaning of life, the sorrow of impermanence, beauty, love for a woman, reflections on death, and a myriad of subtle shades and nuances that leave a pleasant aftertaste.
